Te āheinga: The opportunity

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Corporate and Spatial Planner to help shape positive changes across the District - supporting a thriving community and robust economy. In this role, you will lead and contribute to the development, review and monitoring of key Council plans, policies and strategies that advance our priorities to build partnership, empower people and shape places. We are looking for someone who is either developing their career in this space, or is an experienced planner looking for a new and exciting challenge.

About the role 

This role contributes to the development, maintenance, and implementation of council’s corporate and spatial planning frameworks, ensuring alignment with legislative requirements and best-practice planning principles. The role is also expected to support work that helps prepare Council and the community for the wide range of changes currently facing local government.  

Nga Kawenga me nga Mahi: Responsibilities and Duties

  • Support the development and delivery of Council’s corporate planning functions (eg bylaw and policy development and review, long term and annual plans etc.)
  • Contribute to spatial and place-based planning, ensuring alignment with strategic direction, statutory requirements and relevant legislation
  • Use research, data and spatial analysis to inform growth planning, policy development, climate response and investment prioritisation
  • Provide analysis, reporting, advice and engagement practices to support decision-making.
  • Collaborate across Council and with external stakeholders to ensure integrated, evidence-based planning, while monitoring progress, risks and emerging trends.

He kōrero mōu: We are looking for someone who:

  • Holds a relevant tertiary qualification in Planning, Policy, Social Science or a related field discipline and
  • Has 2-5+ years’ experience in a role with a focus on policy and strategy development, with a high level of practical implementation of relevant legislation
  • Has a good understands of strategic planning, plan development, community engagement and policy preparation
  • Has outstanding communications skills, including the ability to write clear and concise reports, and present orally and visually to internal and external audiences
  • Has political acumen and ability to influence key stakeholder groups or is seeking to grow skills in this space
  • Has a proven track record in building and maintaining effective relationships with key stakeholders
  • Has a strong commitment to health and safety and understands its practical application
  • Demonstrates a strong awareness of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its relevance in a local government environment
